Editorial Review: Maltese Cross (Lychnis chalcedonica) Maltese Cross is a perennial that stands erect at 2' to 3 tall, with an 18" spread. Native to Russia, Maltese Cross has scarlet flowers 3" to 4" in diameter and opposite ovate to lanceolate leaves. It grows well in sun or partial shade in fertile, moist soil, and looks wonderful when planted in small massings to add bold red color to the garden. "Lychnis" is a Greek word meaning lamp - referring to the fiery red flowers. Butterflies and hummingbirds love this plant! Plant 15" apart.
